EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION PROGRAM
The WE-CARE Foundation Liberia’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) programs are a pivotal component of its mission to empower children, families, and communities through foundational literacy and learning. Recognizing that early childhood (ages 0–5) is a critical period for cognitive, social, and emotional development, WE-CARE has developed a comprehensive ECE framework that operates at three distinct levels: school-based, community-based, and home-based.
Multi-Level ECE Approach
WE-CARE’s ECE programs are strategically structured to address the diverse needs of Liberian communities, ensuring that young children receive quality education regardless of their circumstances. The three levels of implementation—school-based, community-based, and home-based—work synergistically to create a holistic ecosystem for early learning.
WE-CARE collaborates with schools to integrate ECE into formal education settings, focusing on pre-primary classrooms in both public and private institutions. This includes training teachers to deliver age-appropriate curricula that emphasize literacy, numeracy, and socio-emotional skills. The organization provides culturally relevant teaching materials, such as storybooks and activity guides, many of which are produced by its Publishing unit.
For children who lack access to formal schools, particularly in rural areas, WE-CARE implements community-based ECE programs. These initiatives establish learning hubs in local settings, such as community centers or libraries, where trained facilitators deliver ECE activities. In 2020, WE-CARE implemented community-based ECE with funding from the World Bank, targeting underserved regions with limited educational infrastructure.
The home-based ECE program, a core component of WE-CARE’s Nurturing Care initiative, empowers parents to serve as their children’s first teachers. Recognizing that many pre-primary children in low-income communities do not attend school, WE-CARE trains parents in both rural and urban areas to create stimulating learning environments at home. This includes teaching parents how to read aloud, use educational toys, and engage in activities that develop language, motor, and problem-solving skills.
The Family Literacy Initiative (FLI) complements home-based ECE by providing parents with toolkits, storybooks, and digital resources, such as the ECE eBooks produced by WE-CARE’s Publishing unit. These materials are tailored to be user-friendly for parents with varying literacy levels, ensuring accessibility. By transforming homes into learning hubs, WE-CARE fosters family bonding and reinforces the value of education within households.
